Scotland
Scottish Folk tradition is as deeply rooted as that of Ireland. And it's not all bagpipes, Ceilidhs and Jimmy Shand either (The folk piping tradition is still very much alive by the way). Shetland Folk with its emphasis on fiddle virtuosity (and one of the few folk forms to use the piano as a prominent instrument) is often seen as a separate development from mainland Scottish music. Gaelic traditional music is often choir based, though has been developed and fused with rock by the likes of Capercaillie and Runrig. Scottish Protest song (again fuelled by the US movement) has been spearheaded by Dick Gaughan, Eric Bogle and obviously Ewan MacColl. While the Ceilidh is still important, elsewhere the cause of Scotfolk is furthered by the fusions of the likes of Tarras or The Battlefield Band.
